Do I need a lawyer for my reckless driving ticket?

If you’re facing a reckless driving charge in Virginia, you’ve probably received a number of pamphlets from local law firms in the area you received your ticket. You’re probably overwhelmed with all of the information, and have no idea whether you need a lawyer, who to call, and/or what questions to ask.

Many criminal defense attorneys provide free consultations for reckless driving tickets (we do!). It is always a good idea to spend a few minutes on the phone with an attorney to decide whether you need their services in the courtroom and to get some advice on steps you can take to put you in the best position when your court date rolls around.

In order to decide whether you need a lawyer, you’ll want to ask yourself  (and a lawyer in a consultation) a few questions:

  • Is it important for you to avoid a misdemeanor conviction for work, school, or otherwise?
  • Do you have any prior criminal charges on your record?
  • What is your driving record like?
  • Are you in jeopardy of losing your license due to your driving record?
  • Do you need to avoid accumulating any more points on your driving record?
  • What are your goals in hiring a lawyer?

Some questions you may want to ask the lawyers you are consulting with are:

  • Do you regularly handle reckless driving cases?
  • Do I have any defenses based on the information I have provided you?
  • Will you be the person in the courtroom with me on my trial date?
  • When was the last time you had a trial on a reckless driving case?
  • What would you charge for my case?
  • Do you know how the judges typically rule in County where I was charged?
  • Are you familiar with the prosecutors in this County?
  • What is the likely outcome of my case if I plead guilty without a lawyer?

You’ll want to make sure that once you’ve decided you need to hire a lawyer that you find someone who has experience in handling charges like yours and who makes you feel comfortable.

Feel free to give us a call to discuss your reckless driving charge and avoid sifting through the rest of those pamphlets!
